Ring ring, ABBA 50th birthday

Ring, ring, Abba 50th birthday to the supergroup’s forgotten Eurovision song.

Catchy Euro pop and a filler on their first Greatest Hits album which has pride of place in the record collection as the first album I bought with my own pocket money.

But back in 1973 Sweden weren’t yet ready to propel the two-boy/two-girl combo onto the European stage.

And we would all have to wait a year before Abba blew Europe away with Waterloo.

All that is apart from Britain, who as is their way to Europe, were tin-eared to the continent and gave them nul points.

Knowing me, knowing UK

Give it a tilt: The girls in charge

The British, of course, have been trying to make amends ever since.

With Abba taking up residence in London… or at least their Avatars have.

Well, we always like to keep the super Swedes for ever young.

For one Fiftysomething boy growing up in Glasgow in the 70s Agnetha was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.

UK, all your love on me

Acceptable in the Seventies: Abba fashion

Our friends at the Irish Travel Agents Association as always are on top of everything.

And want us all to check out the ABBA Voyage show with Keith Prowse Attractions.

They’ll take you to see the Fun Four in London from €328pps for a couple for a one-nighter, travelling between September 24 and 25.

Ireland is, of course, proud of its Eurovison record as the most successful nation in the competition’s history.

Give Abba a call, call

Dance away: The girls having fun

Sweden, though, is closing in after posting its sixth (Abba, naturally were their first) triumph this year in Liverpool when Loreen Tattoo waltzed off with the trophy.

And with perfect symmetry the contest will be held next year in Sweden, 50 years after Abba won Sweden’s first.

Perhaps their best bet would be to give Benny, Bjorn, Anna-Frida and Agnetha a call, call.

Maybe they could see their first Eurovision effort a reprise… Ring, Ring, Abba 50th birthday.
