Wild Atlantic is the Way to go in Portnoo who Noo?

It was the playground of my youth and now an international walkway. The Wild Atlantic is the Way to go in Portnoo who Noo?

Portnoo in south Donegal in north-west of Ireland is famed for its Blue Flag beach and is stop 10 on your Way.

It was something, of course, we lapped up, city dwellers from a grey post-industrial city in Glasgow.

To have 2km of beach stretched out before us just outside our boarding house.

And with rocky pools to explore for a child with an overactive imagination.

And a new friend, and a girl at that, my parents could relax, knowing I was safe, happy and getting exercise.

While they got some adult time with Helen’s parents, Paddy and Sheila.

Who would come to this bolthole from The Troubles from their home in Belfast.

A Donegal Fáilte

The hills of Donegal: On your Atlantic Way

And so a lifetime friendship was forged for my parents.

Which is often the way that we form those bonds through parents of our children.

We have, of course, been back time and time again.

And when I took the plunge and introduced my English rose of a wife to Ireland it was to Portnoo that we came to stay.

Although alas not Shovlin’s Guest House which had long since passed taking visitors and become a private house.

Kee’s to the door: Kee’s hotel, Stranorlar

Instead we took a cottage which gave me that authentic peat-burning experience.

I remembered from trips to my grandparents in nearby Brockagh, my mum’s homestead.

But alas it is another pleasure denied us now but which we got the most out of in our 13 years in Greystones, Co. Wicklow.

An island of adventures

Atlantic crossing: A smaller island to explore

Today as we return her to the Donegal sod on our final journey together we relive old memories on Portnoo beach.

And look out to Iniskhkeel, an island you can walk out to at low tide.

And which holds monastery ruins, again just what an adventurous kid in the middle of his Enid Blyton Secret Seven phase, can absorb.

Trek the 2km walk along the beach and you will arrive at the charming village of Narin.

And don’t be surprised if you bump into parties of international trekkers.

As the Wild Atlantic is the Way to go in Portnoo… who Noo?

Dip your toe in

By the light of the silvery dune: Portnoo

Local kids and big kids still flock to Narin jetty to jump in the North Atlantic Ocean, though not for this landlubber.

For more grown-up pastimes the Portnoo golf club draws back international visitors.

It is a course I have not played since childhood and never will such is the state of my game.

So I guess I won’t find out if they still have the electrical surround around some greens to put off wandering cows.

The best Mum bar none

Dog days: With Dad and Dinky the dog

We are off on our wanders too and we will take in Mum’s childhood home, McNulty’s Bar in Brockagh, now The Ramblers.

And be welcomed with open arms by today’s hosts, Con, and a tray of teas, bran and sandwiches.

The suitcases are assembled in the foyer of our hotel, another family go-to, Kee’s of Stranorlar.

To be transported to a next stop.

For me, it’s an EasyJet flight back from Belfast to Edinburgh and North Berwick and cold reality.

While walkers continue their trek down from the Inishowen Peninsula to Kinsale in Co.Cork, all 2,600s down the west of Ireland.

For Mum, though, this is where she leaves us.

MEET YOU ON THE ROAD

Countries, Ireland, Music

Give Irish Country a twirl

Its roots go back to when the biggest acts skipped Ireland when the locals opted to give Irish Country a twirl.

There were outliers, of course, and the unique Johnny Cash embraced Ireland, and why wouldn’t you?

To the point that he scribed Forty Shades of Green after looking down on Ireland’s patchwork fields from a plane.

The Irish are coming

Music with that: At Harvey’s

But when Country’s grandees stayed away an Irish cottage industry of soundalikes flourished.

Tyrone’s Philomena Begley, Dublin’s own Dickie Rock and the Miami Showband.

And Big Tom and the Mainliners from Ireland’s Nashville in Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan.

And, of course, the Donegal O’Donnell siblings Daniel, or Wee Daniel as he’s known, and Margo.

Irish Country was the soundtrack of my youth visiting my grandparents with my Dear Old Mum in Brockagh, Co. Donegal.

Where we would rent the holiday home next to Harkin’s Bar where Country acts would belt out the acts nightly.

Through the wall and into my bedroom.

Harvey’s cream

Top billing: The Cabaret

The tradition of Irish Country continues to this day.

And drop in anywhere in the country, even on the wrong weekend, as we did in Monaghan, and you’ll learn why.

Ulster, the nine counties which includes the six of Northern Ireland, and Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan in the Republic, is a hotbed of Country music.

And 4* Harvey’s Point, near Donegal town by Lough Eske, Mecca with Irish Country great Tommy Fleming the stand-out draw in a stellar Cabaret season.

Friend to the stars

Kenny’s from heaven: Tommy’s pal

Sligo’s own has shared stages with Kenny Rogers, Phil Coulter and Elaine Page and you could get up and personal to Tommy.

In a Cabaret setting, and having experienced the strains of Van Morrison at the Europa Hotel with my tatties, I’d recommend it.

So why not give Irish Country a twirl?

Harvey’s swanky noise-insulated bedrooms will ensure that the music won’t come through the walls.

But then you’ll probably be up partying all night anyway.

Deal us in

Water place: Lough Eske

Tommy is part of the Cabaret season, performing on Saturday, January 23.

Doors open at 6.45 pm with dinner at 7.30pm sharp.

5 Course Dinner & Entertainment €70.

Two-night stay in a Palatial Suite with brekkie by the Lakeside each morning.

Executive suites from €329pps.

Daniel O’Donnell Live in New York

What’s got grey hair, 100 legs and no teeth? Daniel O’Donnell Live in New York. Or anywhere really!

Daniel O’Donnell’s popularity in his native Ireland can be summed up by a gas boiler advert.

Which Wee Daniel improbably is trying to sell an Oul Biddy.

She is thrilled to have her hero visit her house which is of course Daniel memorabilia.

And naturally pours him his favourite tipple, a cup of tea out of her Daniel O’Donnell teapot.

Step on it: Wee Daniel

Only for Wee Daniel’s No.1 fan to be left aghast when he suggests she should replace the gas boiler.

And she asks him to leave before drawing her Daniel O’Donnell curtains behind her.

You get then that fans of Danny Boy take him and his music and concerts very seriously.

And think nothing of travelling the four corners of the Earth to see him.

And this is where our old friends at Cassidy Travel come in.

Daniel takes New York

Cheeky… Wee Daniel

The Irish travel providers have a four-night package to see Donegal’s favourite son in the Big Apple from December 9 at the NYCB Theatre.

You’ll get those four nights in Manhattan with direct flights, four nights in Manhattan and concert tickets from €1199pps.

And if Wee Daniel isn’t our cup of tea (and we’d suggest to whisper that in Ireland, and particularly Donegal) then they have tickets for another international sensation.

Bocelli’s Big Apple

Et Grazie… to you too Andrea

Opera master Andrea Bocelli is playing Madison Square Garden this December and you can be part of it all with Cassidys.

They’ll give you a four-night package for the gig on December 13, staying in Manhattan.

And, yes, you’ll get direct flights and concert tickets and all from €1399pps… before it’s time to say goodbye (soz)

So that’s Daniel O’Donnell Live in New York. Or Andre Bocelli… so good Cassidy named it twice the offer.

Aviva AmAerican Football

Aviva AmAerican Football and let’s throw this thing forward.

To today’s latest iteration of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at the Aviva Stadium, Dublin (7.30pm).

Between this year the powerhouses of Notre Dame and Navy.

Throwing forward is, of course, the point of American Football… that and touching down.

All of which was news to Mrs M when we were invited to a previous match by Aer Lingus during our 13 years in Ireland.

And, more used to rugby she asked, and this is the third quarter mind, if it was OK to throw the ball forward.

The Fighting Irish

Gridiron giants: The Fighting Irish

Now anyone who has come across the phenomenon that is College Football will know their fans will travel anywhere to see their Alma Mater.

Notre Dame, or the Fighting Irish as they are celebrated, are the most famous name in college football.

Drawing crowds of tens of thousands snd even having their matches televised live on TV.

Noter Dam, as they’re pronounced, hail not from Irish New York or Boston as you might expect.

But north of South Bend, Indiana.

And they regularly draw 70,000 attendances.

The Fighting Irishmen wrap themselves up in the Oul’ Country with their leprechaun mascot and team song Band of the Fighting Irish.

In the Navy

We are sailing: Navy fans

And the Blue and Golds (surprisingly not green) walk the walk and talk the talk, having nailed 11 championships throughout their history.

And judging Notre Dame on how their alumni have fared in NFL.

Then there have only been five Super Bowls that did not feature at least one former Notre Dame player on either team’s roster.

And twelve former Notre Dame players, plus one non-player alumnus, have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall.

So that’s just four off USC (University of Southern California).

With whom they compete for the wonderfully-titled Jeweled Shillelagh.

ND’s rivalry with today’s opponents, Navy, is rather more one-sided.

Navy and Notre Dame played 93 games without interruption from 1927 to 2019 with ND enjoying a 43-game win streak.

The record only snapped by Navy’s win in 2007.

ND also hold an 82-13-1 record over Navy to date.

The Annapolis, Marylanders have a fight on their hands then to overcome the Irishmen back in the Oul Sod.

In truth though today’s game will be a celebration of the ties between Ireland and America.

Aers and Stripes

Cheerleading: Bandanaman and the Bandanettes In Denver

And a reminder of Aer Lingus’s connection with the States (and Canada).

With 16 direct routes with the latest addition to the roster Denver, the Mile High City, and home to the Broncos.

Now Maryland is clearly easier to reach than Indiana, through Washington DC.

We found an 11hr 23mins round trip through Orlando with Aer Lingus to South Bend from €945 round trip.

So as we go all gridiron today and say Aviva AmAerican Football just something to throw forward.

So that you can experience a truly authentic American experience, college football.

Harry FreeStyles in Dublin

I’ve forgiven him for holding up my last leg back from San Antonio as it comes to my attention that Harry FreeStyles in Dublin.

Hip he may be but Harry Styles, these days as big a singing superstars as there is, doesn’t mind getting in with the Great Unwashed.

Harry, you see, did that most South Dublin of things on his travels, the last time he was in the Irish capital.

He jumped into the Forty Foot at Sandycove with the masses.

Bloomin’ cold

Brrrave: The Forty Foot

And in so doing joined such luminaries as James Joyce, his great creation, Leopold Bloom and the landlubber that is your Bandanaman.

In my case I was out as quickly as I got in, Dublin Bay being bracing despite it being the sunniest day of the year on shore.

I had resisted the temptation to join my new compatriots for a few years in my 13 years an Irishman.

Memories of swimming off Spital in Co. Galway as a kid acting as a warning.

Trunk call

In the pink: Harry’s trunks

Well, Harry’s back in Ireland after the UK leg of his world tour.

And his old friends, and ours, at Fáilte Ireland, the National Tourism Development Authority, has marked the moment.

Bunch of Fyffes: The backside

They have only commissioned a bespoke pair of swimming shorts for Harry.

So he is primed and ready to take the plunge in style.

And they have even suggested some prime swimming spots for him to have a dip.

Ooh Bettystown

Just swimmingly: Trunks for Harry

Bettystown Beach, Co. Meath: Now a favourite of my Dear Old Dad who loved a sea swim on holuday

The water here gradually gets deeper, and swimmers can wade in until they find the depth that suits them.

Take a peaceful stroll to the River Boyne at Mornington Beach and watch as ships sail into Drogheda Port.

Best of Brittas

Happy as a sandboy: Brittas

Brittas Bay South Beach, Co. Wicklow: And if Harry likes Sandymount he’ll love Co. Wicklow, maybe as much as we do.

With 5km of powdery white sand dunes, the beach has won and maintained its Blue Flag status for many years.

Carling larger

Harbour light: Carlingford

Carlingford Lough, Louth: Billed as the adventure capital of Louth up the coast from Dublin and Wicklow.

Carlingford is known for its outdoor pursuits and locals love swimming in Carlingford Lough.

At the lake, visitors can take in epic views of Carlingford Castle and Slieve Foye before heading to Sweet Sundaes for their crepes.

Fáilte have flagged up helpful tips to follow before, during and after your swim at www.watersafety.ie which we’re sure Harry will check out.

Greening up: Irish Harry

While for more information, please visit www.discoverireland.ie.

And so keep your eyes peeled.

We know Harry FreeStyles in Dublin and now we could see him in Wicklow and Louth too.
