Take me out to the ball game

No marks for originality here but don’t tell me the song hasn’t been going through your head… take me out to the ball game.

A lot has been going on in the world in the last seven days.

But the one thing everyone has been talking about is the Coldplay Couple.

Caught on a kisscam in Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Cam on now: The Coldplay Couple

Not that the kisscam originated to expose amorous astronaut company CEOs but sneaky Pete’s and Petras will be extra-wary now.

Kisscam has become part and parcel of the American stadium experience, now extended to music concerts.

And, of course, the first thing humiliated Mrs Astro will have said to Bad Boy Businessman will be ‘I will fix you’.

When it was my first rodeo

Go Bronco: Jimmy at Coors Field

The truth is that none of us are safe from the prying lens so just be sure you’ve nothing to hide.

As I discovered at the Coors Field in Denver… and I was indoors at the time.

Practising my rodeo skills on the electronic bull.

Only for it to be shot up on the big screen.

Now entertainment in the Oo Es of Eh has always been even-handed with the fan as valued as the athlete.

And even if you’re not clued up on the intricacies.

And it took two quarters for The Scary One to work out that in American Football you pass the ball forward.

Fly balls and podgy presidents

Home run: In the Bull Pen in Washington

There is always plenty going on in the crowd.

Whether it’s having your hot dog thrown along the row of seats to you.

Trying to catch a fly ball and fans will push their grandparents outta the way for these lucrative artefacts.

While the Seventh Innings Stretch transcends sport.

Dating as far back as the 1860s with Brother Jasper, who brought baseball to Manhattan University.

And started the practice when he called for a break in the game to catch breath.

Where it really takes off is in 1910 when the portly President Howard Taft took time out to stand and stretch his legs.

During a Washington Senators and Philadelphia Athletics match.

And the crowd followed suit in respect.

A date at the game

Duck stops here: The Anaheim Ducks hockey team

The Seventh Innings Stretch now being a thing all that was needed was a song to sing along with.

And so the legend of the baseball anthem Take Me Out To The Ball Game written a few years earlier by Jack Norworth.

Who the story goes was riding a subway in New York.

When he saw a sign that read Baseball Today –Polo Grounds.

In Polworth’s room, Katie’s (and later Nelly’s) fella calls to ask her out to see a show.

To which she agrees but only if he takes her out to the baseball game.

The tradition, of course, has been built upon over the years.

Harry’s game

Walking tall: Outside Wrigley Field

And if there is one figure most associated with it in modern days it is Chicago sportscaster Harry Caray.

Who any visitor to Wrigley Park, the second oldest ballpark in the country will recognise from his statue.

And who we all honoured in the Windy City at the American Travel Fair, IPW, last month.

Sing up: Harry Caray

Though on this occasion my antics weren’t captured on the big screen.

Not that I ever would but certainly not if I ever want these, or future hosts, to take me out to the ball game.

Czech Pilsner is the first among Urquells

A toast to Scottish lager Innis & Gunn on winning gold in the Olympics of Beer, but patriotism aside Czech Pilsner is the first among Urquells for us.

Innis & Gunn’s successes in the Country and Taste Categories and silver in the Taste category at the World Beer Awards is deserved for a fuller lager.

With Scotland not known for its lager, whisky yes, but amber nectar.

With the electric fizzy Tennent’s the template for the less sophisticated Scottish palate.

Until, of course, you get out to see what proper lager is all about at the Nirvana of Nectar, Oktoberfest in Munich.

Top Gunn: Innis & Gunn

Not that any amount of Tennent’s can prepare you for steins of the finest Hofbrau, Lowenbrau or Paulaner.

Thing is though that once savoured you’ll never go back to electric fizzy beer.

And so began a life mission to road test as many different lagers.

Across the world’s great lager-drinking nations of the world to find out which is best.

So here are my alternative podium, my 1-2-3, or top of the froths if you will.

Czechs mate

Look at the head on that: Zatec, Czech Republuc

Pilsner Urquell: And any reason to flag up the oft-repeated claim that the Czechs drink more lager than any other country in the world per head of population.

And that Czech Pilsner is the first among Urquells.

Our Bohemian friends don’t just drink it, they also bathe in it.

And dedicate astronomical clocks to it and have competitions measuring the girth of their beer bellies, as they do in Zatec.

And if you want to try something more left-field then the Loket Ruby beer was so good I took as much of it back with me in my luggage as I could.

Best of the Fest

Booze bus: Munich Beerfest

Hofbrau: And a big-up to the classic Bavarian beer in an attempt to get my ban lifted from 1986.

For trying to split up Bayern and Nuremberg female football fans from fighting, for which I copped a broken nose.

Hofbrau, which is protected under the German Purity Law, is the quintessential Bavarian beer.

But don’t take the word of a tipsy Scot coralled by Aussies and Kiwis. Ask, of all people the Swedes.

During the Thirty Years’ War in 1632, Munich was besieged by Swedish troops but they came up with a wizard wheeze to get them to stop.

They offered the Swedes 23,168 litres from the Hofbräuhaus to spare their city.

Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby: And a 24-hour bar in Munich

These days the celebrated Hofbrauhuis is the best place to clink your steins and sing Ein Prosit.

While your own award-winning Travel Editor is clearly being seen in a different light.

With Ruby Lilly and Ruby Rosi dropping me what they’re offering which is a 24-hour bar service for residents.

With rates from €331 per room per night during Oktoberfest, or from €123 at other times.

Check the Ruby Hotels website for rates, booking and the Oktoberfest Guide.

Beers to American IPA

Avery day’s a school day: With Travis in Colorado

American IPA: OK, I’m cheating here because every time I find a favourite American lager I go to another state and am knocked out by a new one.

I’ve been knocked over by lagers from Angel City Brewery in Los Angeles, perfect prep.

For your La La Land trip to see Los Angeles Angels baseball game.

Through Denver, which bills itself as the beer capital of the US.

And where because it’s the Mile High City you get twice as drunk for half as much.

And Colorado and Avery Brewing Company where Travis works as a beerologist.

Tracing ancient booze from the Biblical times… and I still want his job.

Down to Texas and its Shiner Bock which will salve even the salsaiest Tex-Mex food.

Popping into Mississippi and sopping up your soul food and grits.

Before paying tribute to Old Sam himself, Samuel Adams in Boston, the birthplace of the American Revolution and the American story at Samuel Adams Tap Rooms.

Denver the Aer High City

Things are looking up, as they always do when our old friends at Aer Lingus announce a new North American route… it’s Denver the Aer High City.

Denver, in the apron of the Rockies, has one of the most spectacular vistas anywhere to fly into.

Bear with me: Denver’s Blue Bear

You could even be tempted to tarry awhile in the airport were they not an artsy party city awaiting for you.

The oft-told joke the locals will tell you about their city is that because of the altitude, with being a mile high, it’s a cheap date.

And the thin air means you only have to drink half as much to get twice as drunk.

The Milk High City

Dish of the day: Foodie Denver

The Mile High City is indeed a mind-altering experience and that’s even if you do decide to body swerve the local weed.

Nothing is as it seems when the Denver Milk Market, the cornerstone of the historic Dairy Block, is a beverage and culinary magnet.

The downtown Denver LoDo Wazee Street institution bills itself as a 16-venue space with the whole panoply of culinary delights.

This being Denver craft beer capital of America, of course you’ll never be far away from a bar.

And the Milk Market boasts Moo Bar, the Stranded Pilgrim and the Cellar.

Sign of the times: Colorful Colorado

When we visited for American Travel Fair brunch we had an Otterbox stainless steel thermal tumbler thrust into our hands.

With Welcome to Colorful Colorado branding.

And were invited to fill up the booze stations.

I wear, of course, my white Milk Market band to this day to promise myself that I’ll return.

A high old time

Fits the Bill: Buffalo Bill’s graveyard

And when I do I’ll make fun again jumping on and off the city’s free shuttle bus on the 16th Street Mall.

And take in the LoDo Historic District and the ornate Denver Union Station and maybe take in a game in this sports-mad city.

You will be on a high right through your stay.

A la carte: In Colorado

While Colorado is indeed colorful as Otterbox promised us with an array of must-see attractions out of town.

From wild west pilgrimage at Buffalo Bill’s graveyard to the natural Red Rocks auditorium.

Jocky Mountain High: With my Scots buddy Neil at Red Rocks

And then out to Golden, home of Coors beer, Steamboat Springs and its open steam baths.

To Boulder, home of Mork and Mindy and its great outdoors at Open Space and Mountain Parks.

While if you’ve the stomach for it why not ride the rapids?

Just the ticket

Cheerleaders: For the Bandanaman

You’ll truly not want to leave and have an airport that boasts an art gallery and roof putting course.

But don’t take it to my lengths where you mistime your connections.

And find yourself on an eight-hour lay-off and then miss your London link to Dublin through misreading your ticket.

No problem there with your new Dublin to Denver route, commencing on May 17 next year and operating four times weekly.

Fly the flag: For Colorado

All of which means with the reboot of Minneapolis/St Paul that’s 19 transatlantic routes on April 29.

Initially operating four times per week, before increasing to a daily service from October next year.

Why not set yourself the challenge then of getting around all the destinations starting with Denver the Aer High City.
