Pocohontas twice blessed in The Rotunda

And on the anniversary of her wedding to tobacco planter John Rolfe which forged the earliest American union, a celebration of Pocohontas twice blessed in the Rotunda.

For those whose eyes might have wandered when Donald Trump was inaugurated in the Capitol’s Holy of Holies.

They will, of course, reflect on the commission of George Washington, the Father of the Nation, resigning his commission.

And perhaps miss the Mother of the Nation, Pocohontas, who again it’s worth flagging up is twice blessed in the Rotunda.

In a relief sculpture ‘The Preservation of Captain Smith by Pocahontas’ by Antonio Capellano.

And the painting ‘Baptism of Pocahontas’ by John Gadsby Chapman.

Capitol’s time capsule

Union: Pocohonas’s wedding

The Rotunda is the Capitol’s time capsule chronicling the history of the Union.

Which makes it idiosyncratic that Pocohontas’s story should be included here in Washington.

Although its symbolism and the Native Americans’ birthright to this land makes it as justified as any.

Whether The Donald will one day be immortalised in the Rotunda’s fixtures and fittings is for the future.

But he will undoubtedly return here to lie in state as have 12 presidents from Abraham Lincoln through John F Kennedy to Jimmy Carter.

The modern Pantheon

And here again: Pocohontas

For Americanophiles, and you don’t have to have majored in American history, The Rotunda is a must on your list.

Particularly as you might have missed the 200th anniversary of its completion.

For the visit of that hero of the Revolution, the Marquis de Lafayette’s visit in 1924.

And if it feels familiar to modern-day visitors who have also been to Rome then you’d be right.

As the First Fathers, Classical fans that they were, modelled it on the Pantheon.

A brief tutorial

Lying in state: The presidents on show

Casting your eye around the Rotunda and it is better to sign up with a tour guide brings back old hippy Ted Ranson’s morning lectures.

The paintings of the Declaration of Independence, the Surrender of General Burgoyne, Lord Cornwallis and the aforementioned George Washington.

It’s among the Rotunda’s commemoration of the American explorers’ story that Pocohontas gets a second airing.

Along with the Landing of Columbus, Discovery of the Mississippi and the Embarkation of the Pilgrims.

Although it’s worth remembering that she didn’t do any exploring herself.

The Mother of the Nation

Capitol idea: On the hill in Washington DC

A native of the land around the renamed Jamestown, Virginia.

While there in four wreathed panels above the paintings frame portrait busts of John Cabot, Christopher Columbus, Sir Walter Raleigh and Sieur de La Salle

You’ll see the second Pocohontas in the relief panels above the four entrances.

Among them Daniel Boone. the Landing of the Pilgrims and William Penn’s Treaty with the Indians.

A whole potted history then of America all around you in the Rotunda.

With one Native American rightly taking her place which we will remember especially.

Heal to the Chief and a history of US inaugurations

And as its 47th President Donald Trump calls for unity we’re billing today as Heal to the Chief and a history of US inaugurations.

Much has been made of the ceremony being moved indoors to protect The Donald’s 78-year-old bones from the DC big freeze.

And the absence of razzmatazz of the swearing-in with the Capitol, Washington and Lincoln Memorials in the background.

World village: The Donald

And the public needing to queue to watch the inauguration indoors on big screens at the Capitol One Arena.

Where The Village People had performed at the Trump celebration rally the night before.

And the Dancing Dad-in-Chief burst out his moves.

Start spreading the news

Let’s be Frank: Rat Pack in Vegas

We all have our own memories of past Washington inaugurations many impressed on us through the years.

Such as John F Kennedy imploring his fellow citizens to ‘Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.’

Capitol idea: On the hill in Washington DC

And Robert Frost, he of ‘the stopping by woods on a snowy evening‘ delivering an oration.

And Frank Sinatra heralding in the participation of showbiz with his fancy ball.

Carrie on a great tradition

Carrie some punch: Ms Underwood

Where Frank led America’s greatest musicians have followed.

Aretha Franklin headlined Jimmy Carter’s celebrations in 1977.

That great showbiz groupie Bill Clinton had Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac and Barbra Streisand involved.

The 48th President of America: In Washington DC: After you Donald

While Barack Obama and Joe Biden pulled in the big guns of their day in Beyonce and Lady Gaga to sing the national anthem.

The Donald is returning to the Country base from which he draws so much support.

In inviting Carrie Underwood to sing America The Beautiful.

Capitol’s Holy of Holies

Capitol dividends: And the Rotunda

For all the glitz there is at the heart of the American inauguration a solemn oath and undertaking.

And it is proper that the inauguration take place in the Capitol’s Holy of Holies, the Rotunda.

Where Kennedy’s body was laid out as have presidents and great American patriots since.

Among the friezes on the walls of the Rotunda is the national motto E pluribus unum (out of the many few).

This year’s blond: With ‘The Donald’ in New York

The 47th President has, of course, signalled his intention to sign off on 100 executive orders so will get a good look at that seal.

Which he well knows from his last period of office.

So with that noble thought in mind we say: Heal to the Chief and a history of US inaugurations.
