A bridge over Sicilian waters

And as no uomo is an island, our Italiani amici are following the modern fashion of linking land, with a bridge over Sicilian waters.

All of which €13.5bn public project money will connect Sicily to Italy 2 miles across the Messina Strait.

The ambition to join Italy and Sicily has been a long-held target.

Omerta: Sicilians

With the government first proposing the scheme in 1971.

And revising it in 2022 following multiple cancellations on the grounds of hard lira/euro.

With the project to erect the world’s longest single-span bridge starting next May and slated for completion in 2032.

No Ponte

Ferry good: Reggio Calabria to Sicily takes 35 minutes.

Whatever has changed, and cynics might say it’s a politicians’ protection racket, it looks like this time it will go ahead.

And proponents will point to better access for Sicilians to Il Bel Paese, the Beautiful Country, and increased trade with them spitting out 120,000 jobs in the pipeline.

While the romantics will plead that the watery divide is what gives Sicily its very island identity and the bridge will remove that and alter the environment irrevocably.

Mamma mia: Mariolina. Picture: AlJazeera

Only the Sicilians aren’t as easily persuaded with 10,000 out protesting at the weekend waving their ‘No Ponte’ or ‘No Bridge’ placards.

With Mamma Mariolina De Francesco, a 75-year-old resident of Messina whose house lies near the site of one of the bridge’s 399m-tall land towers particularly animated.

Bridge too far: The protests. Picture: AlJazeera

Saying:  ‘They could offer me three times the value of my house, but that doesn’t matter to me. What matters is the landscape. They must not touch the Strait of Messina.’

The Sea and the Skye

Bonnie fechter: Bonnie Prince Charlie

Now all this is familiar territory for those of us who live on a rock.

With Scotland engineering out Jacobean romance bridging Skye and the mainland.

Because had Bonnie Prince Charlie been fleeing Hanoverian forces in 1746 it would have been a very different escape.

In the boot of a car crossing the bridge rather than dressed up as Flora MacDonald’s maidservant.

On a bonnie boat like a bird on a wing over the sea to Skye.

Jutting out

Fairytale island: Andersen’s Zealand

Now don’t quiz us on this but Copenhagen sticks out for many reasons but specifically because its biggest city and the country’s capital is on an island, Zealand, off the mainland, Jutland.

So that its citizens, such as Hans Christian Anderson’s Little Mermaid had to swim to get anywhere.

All before the 5-mile Oresund Bridge between Zealand and Sweden came along in the year 2000… and blame the Millennium for many of these projects.

Channel your frustrations

Soulless: The Channel Tunnel

And for those of us of a certain age, and the rest who followed the news reel, one of the great engineering vanities, celebrated at the end of the century, was the Channel Tunnel.

All when the English and French, for a brief time, got on with each other in 1994.

And there was great hoopla made of an English workman and a French counterpart meeting at the point where the 31 mile tunnel joined.

Of course modernists will tell you that this has made travel to the continent and for Europeans wanting to get to this island all the easier.

Which may be tree but it is a soulless journey and not without its delays… and you will of course miss that glorious sight of the White Cliffs of Dover.

There’s a black hole over the tunnel entrance to France.. Vera Lynn would turn in her grave.

Naw, give us our ferries, or even better party cruises going around in circles in the Med, a bit like Brexit really.

And if there’s a lesson in there somewhere, you’re welcome.

And a salutary piece of advice for the Italians and Sicilians (and if you’ve ever met any then you’ll know they are very different) about building a bridge over Sicilian waters.

Goodbye to newly wed, overfed and nearly dead cruise cliches

It was the standard joke but it’s changing and we can now say goodbye to newly wed, overfed and nearly dead cruise cliches.

While our cruising days in our 13 years in our ancestral Irish home were in our early 50s that’s now higher than the average cruise age.

Cruise Lines International Association’s (CLIA) latest annual passenger study has revealed that Irish cruisers are getting younger.

With the average guest age dropping to 46.3 years in 2024 from 46.7 in 2023.

On the up

Our back yard: SH Diana in Leith

The finding comes as overall Irish cruise passenger numbers increased last year.

By 11.3% to 65,000, the highest total recorded.

The Mediterranean remains their destination of choice, with 61.3% of all voyages taken.

The Caribbean came in second at 17.7%, while northern Europe was at 6.1%.

The latter scored a 25% uplift in overall journeys taken.

Representing the highest growth among the main cruise itineraries.

With an average length of a sailing is 7.9 days.

Fjord fiesta

Presented with a choice by our pals at MSC to showcase Meraviglia we opted for a cruise around the fjords.

In preference to Europe, having sailed the Western Med, and the Persian Gulf.

While I’d opted to be a landlubber in the Caribbean, Barbados and Tobago.

Now My Little Mermaid soon befriended a Fortysomethings couple on our passage around Denmark and Norway.

And had them upgraded on our hospitality.

In exchange for a crash course in His hobby, tunnelling.

Forties’ forte

Toast of the seas: My date with a Princess

Fortysomethings, and I was one once, come in all shapes and sizes.

And they have all the moves as our cruise crew can testify.

Having partied everywhere from the Med to the English Channel and the Bahamas.

While we don’t even have to leave dry dock as we like to live it up whenever the boat comes in.

Whether Princess, a Royal, a Celebrity or a Swan.

Ship shape

Love me Tender: Celebrity Cruises, Bahamas

And yes, we know that the first rule of cruising is to give Her the deference She deserves as a ship and not a boat.

Andy Harmer, CLIA UK & Ireland managing director, said: ‘Cruise is thriving among Ireland passengers.

‘The convenience and value-for-money a holiday at sea offers shining through.’

All of which means we can say goodbye to newly wed, overfed and nearly dead cruise cliches.

Monaco Grand Prix at sea

It’s the ultimate in affluence… the Monaco Grand Prix at sea.

Because while the sporting action today is around the streets the partying is on the superyachts in the harbour.

And you too can arrive in style off shore on your eight-night ROL all-inclusive cruise for next year’s race.

Take it as red: Monaco Grand Prix

You’ll fly out from London to Nice on June 1 and overnight at a 4* hotel before transferring to the Azamara Journey.

And a cruise around Italy, the Cote D’Azur and the Balearics, starting in Santa Margherita, a take-off point for trips to Cinque Terre.

And taking in the Gulf of Poets, where Byron and Shelley hung out, in Portovenere, and Firenze and Pisa.

All revved up

Full of Grace: Grace’s place, Monaco

Before you head for Villefranche, France to join the starting grid in Monte Carlo and head back after the action.

To partying on your bells and whistles ship.

After all that wining and dining and schmoozing you’ll want an easy cruise… down to Palma, Mallorca.

Ship shape: In Barcelona

Before heading back to the party port of Barcelona for your flight back to London.

So, the ideal way to make your grand entrance for the grand prix in Monaco.

Le Grand Tour

Riviera of dreams: Monte Carlo

And certainly a more leisurely way to leave the party than my first grand depart from Saint-Raphael train station.

When I went AWOL in search of beer only to see the train take off with my pals shouting out of the carriage.

Naturellement, I used my initiative and hopped on the next one and a further train, ferry and overnight bus later.

I was back home in Ecosse where my pal Martin was very glad to hear me on the other end of the phone and not having to explain to my Dear Old Mum why I hadn’t come back with them.

Saving the best until last

Thrills and spills: Formula One

Now your Club Oceanview cabin on the Azamara Journey comes in at £4,599 down from £5,449.

And includes return flights from London with regional and premium class flights available on request and overseas transfers.

While there is also an exclusive complimentary on board spend of up to $400 for Club Oceanview Staterooms and above.

All to make your cruise experience special with a Monaco Grand Prix at sea at its centre.

Pleasure cruises to unite Argentina and the Falklands

Where battleships once crowded the South Atlantic seas now pleasure cruises to unite Argentina and the Falklands, or Malvinas.

The invaders though, as is always best, arm themselves with binoculars, cameras and money to spend.

On board ROL Cruises’ 21-nighter, showcasing ballroom Buenos Aires, the immense Iguazu Falls.

And the fauna and flora of the Falklands and ch-ch-ch-chilly penguins of Chile.

With your South Atlantic odyssey a year and a half away, flying out of London on February 21, there’s plenty of time to save up.

Tango in the night

Put back into it: Tango in Buenos Aires

You’ll quickstep into your holiday with a two-night stay in the Argentine capital.

At a 5* hotel with a dinner and tango show as part of a Concierge Class Stateroom and a Buenos Aires tour of the city’s highlights.

Your feet, barely touched the ground, you’ll be hotfooting it back to the airport for the next leg of your journey.

Two nights at Iguazu, at a 5* airport, naturally.

Before taking in the 55,000 hectares National Park and its lush rainforest.

Named for the river serving its northern border, meaning ‘great waters’ in the Gurani language.

Falling over yourself

Burn Buenos Aires: And beautiful airs

You’ll be taken to the 80m-drop waterfalls that separate Argentina from Brazil and which are taller and wider than Niagara.

From where you can look down the Devil’s Throat from the balcony at Garganta del Diablo.

Attack it from the base by taking the elevator down to the base and stop right above river level.

From a 1,000m footbridge, admire the Falls or go up an elevator to the Salto Floreano viewpoint.

Celebrity status

Boat comes in: In Stanley Harbour

You’ll overnight again in Buenos Aires before boarding Equinox from our favourite Celebrity stable.

And your 14-night all-inclusive voyage.

You’ll tick off another country with a stop-off in Montevideo in Uruguay.

Before claiming another for yourself with the Falklands/Malvinas which, of course, takes some sailing.

And you’ll be grateful your whale of a vessel in Stanley Harbour.

Which is dotted with the hulks of whalers vessels that succumbed to the fierce winds and waves of the South Atlantic.

Cape crusaders

Stars come out: In Chile

Buttressed by the bulk of Celebrity Equinox to cruise by Cape Horn and the Strait of Magellan to get round the other side.

To the Punta Arenas of Chile and gawp at the soaring mountains, beautiful national parks, vast ice fields and towering glaciers.

And even trek through Magallanes National Reserve or visit the penguin colony at Seno Otway.

Before leaving the saddlers behind for the next party.

And turning back on yourself for Puerto Madryn, Argentina, Punta Del Este, Uruguay and Buenos Aires and home to London.

Deal us in

Ship shape: Celebrity Equinox

It’ll be plain sailing too with a discount taking your Oceanview cabin down from £6,899 to £5,999.

So as you plan your calendars then make this your task force.

Slave ships to rave ships off West Africa

They’re pleasure cruises on the horizon now and we’re invited to track the voyage from slave ships to rave ships off West Africa.

Our friends at cultural expedition cruise pioneers Swan Hellenic have plotted routes north to the south of Africa for us.

From Cape Town to Casablanca and on to Lisbon, or south from Lisbon to Luanda.

Ship-shape: With the SH Diana

And all at a generous 15 per cent saving thousands compared with the individual fares.

The first departs Cape Town on 25 March 2026, combining five northbound cruises.

To create a 51-night Grand Voyage, sailing the entire West Coast of Africa to Casablanca and on to Lisbon.

The second is a 35-night Grand Voyage sailing south from Lisbon to Luanda from 7 September 2026.

The passage of history

Into Africa: And day itineraries

Swan Hellenic doesn’t skirt the fact that for hundreds of years the ships sailing out of West Africa carried slaves around the world.

But rather they introduce passengers to the forts of the transatlantic slave trade.

While at the same time getting up close and personal with the coastal elephants.

The lakeside dwellings of Benin and the pristine Bijagos Archipelago.

Proud: African heritage

And from exploring the twisting cobbled streets of ancient medinas to falling in love with Lisbon.

Each Grand Voyage is on the purpose-built boutique ship SH Diana.

Which, of course, we know all about after spending time with her.

When she came up to see us in Leith last summer.

And saw how she can host 192 guests in 96 staterooms and suites, the majority with large balconies.

Oh Diana

Luxury: On the sea

SH Diana features a state-of-the-art gym, spa, panoramic sauna, club room, swimming pool with poolside grill.

And three dining venues: the Swan Restaurant, Club Lounge, and Pool Bar & Grill.

The five northbound cruises in the first half of 2026 range from seven to 13 nights long.

And are all still available separately or daisy chained as desired.

Ya dancer: African tribal dancing

With an 11-night Cruising in Namibia: the Skeleton Coast offer, departing Cape Town on 25 March 2026 and arriving in Luanda on 5 April 2026.

The 13-night Southwest Africa Cruise, departing Luanda on 5 April 2026and arriving in Tema (Accra) on 18 April 2026.

The 13-night Cruise West Africa: The Slavery Coast, departing Tema (Accra) on 18 April and arriving in Dakar on 1 May.

The 7-night Cruise from Senegal to Morocco, departing Dakar on 1 May 2026 and arriving in Casablanca on 8 May 2026.

The 7-night Morocco to Portugal Cruise, departing Casablanca on 8 May 2026 and arriving in Lisbon on 15 May 2026.

The incredible expedition cruise leads in from £42,999 pp in a balcony stateroom based on two sharing.

Beautiful south

Voodoo you think you are: In Benin

The three southbound cruises in the second half of 2026 are:

The 9-night Atlantic Cruise from Portugal to Senegal, departing Lisbon on 7 September 2026 and arriving in Dakar on 16 September.

The 13-night The Slavery Coast: from Senegal to Ghana, departing Dakar on 16 September 2026 and arriving in Tema (Accra) on 29 September 2026.

The 13-night West Africa Cruise from Ghana to Angola, departing Tema (Accra) on 29 September 2026 and arriving in Luanda on 12 October 2026.

The incredible expedition cruise leads in from £23,664 pp in an Ocean-view stateroom based on two sharing.

And though we all live these days in what they call ‘uncharted waters’ with Swan Hellenic they remind us.

How much better off we are as we have progressed from slave ships to rave ships off West Africa.

No Flim-Flam follow the fjords up to the Arctic

And when you imagine what’s over the Arctic then you think… no Flim-Flam follow the fjords up to the Arctic.

Not that we’d change anything about our MSC cruise in Norway.

Well, maybe the fog that descended on the day trippers on the Flam railway.

And the only way to do that is to stay on the right side of the Norse gods.

Circle with Celebrity

Boat comes in: Norse seafaring

Of course not even the great Norwegian railways can carry you as high as the Arctic.

So to get in among the ice you’ll need to cruise there.

But while it’ll be a slow boat to the Circle you’ll have to get your skates on to avail of the Celebrity Cruises 2025 offer.

With bonus savings of up to €600 per room that ends February 3.

You’ll spend 12 days on Celebrity Apex from €2,189pp on July 5.

Departing Southampton and easing yourself into your cruise with a day at sea.

Jazzing it up

Cruise chums: With Herself

Your first port of call will be Haugesund where each summer they jazz things up with a music spectacular and a film festival.

Which will get you in the mood for Flam,

Where you can rumble 2,800ft up the wilds of Norway.

A Troll and butter: Local fare

Or kayak through the calm waters of the Aurlandsfjord.

Now it’s as well to have all the deities on your side and you’ll get that opportunity on Olden.

Visiting Olden Old Church, built in 1759 on the site of the original stave church dating back to the 14th century.

Northern Lights and Midnight Suns

Reflections: On Tromso

You’ll spend a day at sea to get to its capital Tromso.

Prime location for Northern Lights spotters and cable car vistas.

Nicknamed ‘The Paris of the North’ Tromso has an enviable culinary scene.

Trickle of history: Waterfalls

And we’re advised to have a pint at Mack’s Ølhallen, one of the world’s northernmost breweries.

While for culture vultures Tromso is well-served.

With the Arctic Cathedral and its stained-glass window, the Tromsø Cathedral; the Polaria and Perspective museums.

Gateway to the Arctic

Verdant: Molde

By Day 8 the anticipation will be up and you’ll be transfixed when you see Honningsvag on the island of Magerøya.

Tagged the Gateway to the Arctic Circle the fishing town was rebuilt after World War II.

And it is one of the best places to experience the ‘midnight sun.’

Turning round you’ll head to Molde, ‘the town of roses’.

And hike up to the Varden Viewpoint.

And take in the scenery of the Molde Panorama and 22 snow-capped mountains and sparkling fjords.

Take to the Pulpit

Wash away: Your troubles

Stavanger will be your last stop-off before heading back to England.

So it’s good to know you’re not overdoing it on the hike.

To Pulpit Rock, the cliff rising over 1800ft above the sea, with views of the Lysefjord and the surrounding lush terrain.

Of course, you’ll be well-served on a Celebrity cruise but there’s a further cornucopia of options on land.

Putt it there: A gentle game

Including outstanding fish and mussels, with French American, Japanese, and Indian influences found throughout the city.

Now your final day will be your last chance to unwind with the R&R on board.

Lounge by the pool, be spoiled at the spa and taste the delicacies or brush up on your putting (where else?)

Before arriving back on English terra firma.

And tell your friends and family not to Flim-Flam follow the fjords up to the Arctic.

A deal for Greenland

It’s the kind of offer The Donald himself would be celebrating… a deal for Greenland.

And Oceania Cruises are pitching an Iceland, Greenland and Canada in the Fall 20-night package with savings of up to 20%.

You’ll fly from London Heathrow to the Icelandic capital Reyjkavik on August 25 and make your way on the cruise ship Insignia to the fishing village of Husavik for whale-watching.

Skjalfandi Bay boasts minke, humpback and blue whales and white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises.

Before heading for The Donald’s next real estate acquisition.

Green with envy

Ice one: Greenland

All the human life in Greenland is in the south in Qaqortoq (and you’re welcome for that Scrabble word).

Qaqortoq is known for its stunning fjord views and colourful buildings.

You’ll visit the Greenland National Museum and see the famous Stone & Man sculptures throughout the area.

You can also take a boat trip around the nearby islands and hike up the Sermitsiaq mountain.

Or enjoy the vibrant local culture and delicious Greenlandic cuisine.

Old Canada and New England

This year’s blond: ‘The Donald’ in New York

Now you’ll go back in time for the Canadian leg of your odyssey to Saint John, New Brunswick, the country’s oldest city.

Known for its rich maritime history, highlights include the Reversing Falls, historic architecture and the Saint John City Market.

The Oceania Cruise bills itself as Iceland, Greenland and Canada but you’ll also get to enjoy the charms of New England too.

And visit Bar Harbor, Maine, Boston, Massachusetts and President Trump’s home city New York where you’ll fly back to London.

Ship ahoy

Fine living: The Insignia

Your Ocean View cabin will come in at £5,799pp, down from £7,519.

And we’re advised to book by 8pm on January 26 to receive a free case of wine.

Now a bit about the ship… and Insignia is midsize with an elegant yet contemporary atmosphere.

With all the features you would expect… baristas, Grand Bar, bridge, card room, boutique, casino, shuffleboard, fitness center and track and putting greens.

There’s a Grand Dining Room, library, lounge, dining experiences and pool.

A spa terrace, steam room, styling salon and sun deck.

Not that our friend The Donald would ever need any toning up.

It all adds up to a deal for Greenland and we should all jump on board.

MSC killing it again on their whodunit drama

And of course we never have to leave our armchair with MSC killing it again on their whodunit drama it’s just more fun if we do.

We jumped right on board when we heard that our old cruise chums had lent their name.

Ship hot: Kate and Jack and The Good Ship Murder

And showpiece ship Virtuoso to the Shayne Ward and Catherine Tyldseley series.

Now we’re glad to say that we’ve enjoyed the pleasure of sailing with MSC.

Virtuoso signalling: MSC showpiece

And can vouch for the unmatched entertainment and hospitality they offer.

Although we never did see any passengers get killed.

Although The Scary One might have been tempted on more than one occasion and had me leaning over the edge too.

Hopping around the hotspots

Trunk call: In Barcelona

Viewers have been hooked since on the scrapes Shayne’s crooner Jack and the ship’s First Officer get into as sailing sleuths in The Good Ship Murder.

Now it’s no reveal that the plots are thin but it never bills itself as Morse .

And is of course just an excuse for some escapism and a glimpse into the ship and the exotic destinations.

And so we have been transported at our leisure around the hotspots of Europe and North Africa, many which we’re glad to say we’ve enjoyed.

Cruise twos: On MSC trip of the fjords

La Rochelle, the pride of south-west France, Lisbon, the gateway to the New World.

Precious Palma in Majorca, mystical Sicily, operatic Barcelona and the jewel of the Med, Malta’s Valletta.

And of course the Moroccan legend that is Casablanca where they always say ‘Sail it again’.

From Rome to Dubrovnik

You pearler: With Sadie in Dubrovnik

We were caught out somewhat when Jack and Kate returned to the high seas in Rome.

To find out that Claire Sweeney’s ents manager Beverley was no longer on board.

And worried that someone had done her in but phew there was a Christmas episode lurking in our Catch Ups.

And in the Pearl of the Adriatic too, Dubrovnik, where we had spent our Pearl Anniversary year at the end of last year.

Ports of call

Ya dancer: In Athens

Good Ship Murder has promised us a whistle stop tour of other magical destinations over the coming winter weeks.

While we shiver back here in damp Britain and Ireland.

And we’re looking forward to some more of our favourites like the Canaries, Gozo and Athens.

And maybe they’re keeping the glorious and supernatural Norwegian fjords for the next series.

Either way we’re happy to see MSC killing it again on their whodunit drama.
