The Big Reveal… the passports to access

And as we plan our destinations for the year I’m reminded of my globetrotting Bangladeshi pal Asmery. As we post Big Reveal… the passports to access.

We met, where else, than at a Caribbean night in Barbados.

Map it out: Your plan

Where impressed by my Dad dancing (it’s all from the bum I was told in Soca class years earlier) we got talking.

And she told me how she had sold all her jewellery years earlier to begin her global odyssey.

Asmery… Christmas & a Happy New Year

But that possessing a Bangladeshi passport had proved a major obstacle along the way.

Which only made me think of the benefits of our own UK passport although that has been diminished by Brexit.

Meaning an Irish one, something I could apply for through my Dear Old Mum is a New Year Resolution I must finally follow through on.

Particularly as new travel friends have first-footed us with advice on the best passports to have.

Quality street

Walking on air: In Copenhagen

Global Citizen Solutions, a data-driven immigration advisor has unveiled its Quality of Life Index 2024.

Which they say is a tool guiding those seeking not just a change of scenery, but an elevation in the quality of their lives.

Of course, as with everything, Finland tops the list, and the Nordic countries take the first three places.

The Finns, due to their low-income inequality, social support and infrastructure, freedom to make decisions, and low levels of corruption.

With the Swedes on the same page and the Danes especially noted for their work/life balance.

All of which translates into the hygge which is so attractive to visitors.

Index finger

Wheely good: Cycling in Amsterdam

As for the UK, it holds its own in fourth, followed by Germany, neighbours the Netherlands.

Then Ireland, Austria, Spain and New Zealand.

The Index, as you’d imagine, highlights social well-being, but also sustainability.

Ready to go: Your UK passport

In all there are six main weights of indicators:

Sustainable Development Goals, Cost of Living, Level of Freedom, Happiness, Environmental Performance and Migrant Acceptance.

With The World Bank, the World Economic Forum and the Sustainable Development Report weighing in with their knowledge.

From the horse’s mouth

Destress: Around the world

‘We believe that a passport is not merely a document; it is a vessel of potential, a gateway to a life well-lived,’ says Patricia Casaburi, Managing Director for Global Citizen Solutions.

‘The Quality of Life index encourages users to explore the boundless possibilities that a passport can offer if you are looking to relocate.

‘But it is also a fantastic tool if you just want to plan your next travel destination.’

All of which is good to know as we plan our next trip this year. The Big Reveal… the passports to access.

Caribbean, Countries

A year of the Barbados republic

And while my fellow Scots wallow in the nostalgia of their national day my focus is on a year of the Barbados republic.

Because this is the only Scotland, the Highland region of the Caribbean island, where the King doesn’t reign over us.

Back when he was only a prince last November, Charles wriggled uncomfortably as he had to give the island back to the Bajans.

St Andrew’s Day 2022 is a beacon of hope for what Scotland could be.

The Bajan march

The northern part of Britain and the southern Caribbean island have more than just the national day in comm

And depending on when you visit you might even see a clan of Bajan Scots come marching through Bridgetown.

The swirl of the pipes filling the hot Bajan air.

All for the Celtic Festival Barbados which this year runs from May 18-23.

And will likely include again the ceilidh rock band Bahookie who have become quite the fixture on the island.

Harbour delights

They will entertain you royally (or republicanally which I may just have invented) at the Harbour Lights Bajan cultural night.

And maybe you too can befriend them in the Coconut Court Beach Hotel.

They’re a lively bunch which you’ll get an early swatch of on the British Airways flight over.

With the Scottish band naturally being where the party is.

In with the bricks

Me-me and Ri-Ri

Of course when you land your favourite Travel blogger is where the party is…

He’s the one whose name is on the Building of Barbados Wall near to Rihanna.

And who you can find at a rum bar, or doing the Gay Gordons on the Boardwalk.

After sampling the best Scotch whiskies at a brands fair.

With the sun splitting the heavens in Barbados today at 28C why would you want to be a subject of the King in chilly Scotland.

When you could be limin’ and jumping and celebrating a year of the republic in Barbados.

I’m a Bajan Murtyman

It’s not just Celts and Bajans here, though that is just about as perfect a mix as you could find anywhere in the world.

We also converted a major Bangladeshi travel blogger to our Celtic/Bajan band of revellers.

And how did I introduce myself to Mery… yes, I’m a Bajan Murtyman.

Mick Jagger in Barbados

It’s good family cabaret fun with knockabout dance routines and nods to colonial history but celebrations too of links to the African motherland.

And then there’s the circus fun of fire eaters and dancers on stilts.

But the masses come for the dancing with the band putting on a set of Soca and modern bangers.

Which has young and old tearing it up on the beach stage.

Oh, and did I say there was an open bar for de rum drinkers.

Yes, there’s beer and other booze too to wash down the chicken, rice, fish too.

Band on the rum

High life: Stilts at the show

The singer in the band has donned a kilt for us and Jeana and her Scots group who will be entertaining us all at this weekend’s Barbados Celtic Festival.

While the steel pan band reimagine pop classics, it’ll give you the same tingle their drums do.

Yes, in the words of Crop Over Soca star Rupee… I don’t give a damn, I’m a Bajan Murtyman.

Who says so? Well, only de whole of Barbados who have commemorated me with a special inscription.

Yes, I’m in with de bricks with my name carved into the special Building of Barbados Wall.

I know where you live: Rihanna’s childhood house

It was erected last November on Independence Square in Barbados ahead of Barbados breaking 396 years of British rule by becoming a Republic.

And it marks the influence of Bim families who have lived here.

De best indoor show

Pantastic: The steel pan band

For the rest of Bajan history then get on board Ronnie and Ingrid’s Footprints island coach tour.

And the Harbour Lights dinner and show experience.

I’ll dip in and out of Ronnie’s treasure trove of knowledge as I go but for now a few words on Harbour Lights.

Situated in Savannah on the south-west coast and overlooking beautiful Carlisle Bay, Harbour Lights only put on de best damn indoor show on de island.

Looking up for stilts dancers
